Pandora Hearts Chapter 76-78
What can I say? I’m so proud of Gilbert!!
I decided not to read the manga for a while because I can’t handle how each chapter ends with something that will make you want more. So, I told myself: Darn it, I’ll just wait for another 1 or 2 chapters before reading it. And I was right. Chapter 76’s ending left readers hanging and I really want to pat myself on the back because I didn’t dare open the chapter when I was informed that the manga’s updated.
Because of the anime (and actually the first part of the manga, too), I was lead to believe that Alice Will of the Abyss has completely antagonistic characteristics. Boy, was I wrong! It never occurred to me that maybe the two Alice’s do have a sisterly connection; I never thought they actually are cordial to each other.
I thought Alice (White) is jealous of Alice because she is in the real world and gets to spend much of the time with Jack. Though I couldn’t say that my initial thought is entirely wrong because it was stated that White Alice enjoyed Jack’s company (just how Glen, Vincent, and Gil did). But I’m a bit taken aback when she agreed with Alice’s idea of destroying her memories so that she could never again be inclined to do Jack’s wishes.
So they did look out for each other, huh?
And that melancholic character of the Alice from a hundred years ago wasn’t Oz’s Alice but the Will of the Abyss. I thought Alice developed her strong headedness when all she could remember is that she is B-Rabbit - the strongest of the chains. She might actually have that characteristic even before the memories were shattered.
I love the idea that the Alices still exist even after their physical body’s death. It just shows that the twins really are not meant in this world. I also adore how Oz accepted that the body that he is in is not his. I thought he’d struggle more but I’m really glad that he didn’t. Accepting that there is nothing in this world that he could call as his own is not easy and I applaud Oz for doing so because it hurts to know that you can’t do anything about it.
For a second there (the one where Rufus is reading Arthur Barma’s notes to Leo/Glen), I thought Jack wasn’t as awful as was suddenly presented to us. People are never one-sided; never pure bad or pure good. When Arthur said that Jack started Pandora and placed these things and asked Zai to adopt his body, I think he was at least making some things work out. (Or maybe I’m just that naive.) Maybe he thought that he’d actually be able to rest now that a single part of him is fading every time he turns younger and another soul would take his place inside the body. It felt like he was trying to give Oz a new environment to live.
At this point, I still can’t see how putting Oz inside the Vessalius clan help him go nearer to Lacie.
I love how the chains have their own personalities and opinions. How Raven remembered Gilbert and that it cared enough to warn him that his left hand will be a burden to him (or something like that) and that it already knows what Gilbert is planning on (maybe because it’s one of the chains that holds this world that it can see the future… I don’t know) I just wish that, even though
Gil lost his left arm, he didn’t lose Raven because that means he’ll lose another ‘friend’ worth keeping. (Admit it, we don’t get lots of that)
It was cool that he made his own decision. In life, it’s very difficult to do that what with all peer pressure and demonstration effect but it gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling like you’ve accomplished something to be proud of when you’ve done it.
Over all, I’m proud of Gil. I’m proud of the development of the characters. And it seems to be more 3D / living / realistic to me now more than ever before, seeing that the characters are not all out to either “destroy!! Destroy you because I’m bad-ass and I’m supposedly the villain” or “I’m nice! I have to be shy and quiet and do all the good things because I’m on the good side!’
People here are torn between decisions between their past and present and possibly their future. They are torn between their own feelings and the feelings of those who are around them. Identical to how real people make decisions.
I expect a lot more from this manga. It just keeps on getting a lot more exciting. The world is really jumbled up and it’s very good to see everyone’s point of view once in a while even though it’s perplexing at times. Let’s just all wait for the next chapters!! :D
